Asian/Pacific American Student Services Assistant Director
Colorado State University invites nominations and applications for the position of Assistant Director of Asian/Pacific American Student Services. The Mission of Asian/Pacific American Student Services (A/PASS) exists to support the matriculation, retention, and graduation of Asian/Pacific American students at Colorado State University through direct services to students as well as through educational and cultural campus-wide programs. A/PASS Student Services is a part of the Division of Student Affairs, specifically one of seven Advocacy Offices that supports underrepresented students at CSU. The Division of Student Affairs at Colorado State University is a comprehensive student affairs program that serves a major state university and land grant college. The Division of Student Affairs encompasses a wide array of departmental services and programs addressing the needs of a student body of approximately 25,000.
Colorado State University is located in Fort Collins, a city of 135,000, 65 miles north of Denver. The city offers a unique blend of metropolitan advantages and small town friendliness. On the western edge of the Great Plains and at the eastern base of the Rocky Mountain foothills, Fort Collins with its ideal climate provides easy access to numerous outdoor activities. Within easy driving distance of the city is the Rocky Mountain National Park, three National Forests, and opportunities for world-class skiing, white-water river rafting and kayaking, fishing, hiking, boating, and camping. Fort Collins is a bicycle-friendly city and has over 300 days of sunshine a year.
Position Description:
The Assistant Director takes a lead role in the development and coordination of programs that enhance awareness of the many and varied aspects of Asian/Pacific American cultures. Another important role is that of supervising, advising, and working with individual students and student groups and providing appropriate support for them related to their specific concerns. The Assistant Director will also be involved in teaching, training, consulting and other activities that will assist others in enhancing their multicultural understanding. The Assistant Director reports to the Director of A/PASS and is part of the Office Management Team that includes the Director, Assistant Director and Administrative Assistant.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Minimum of two years full-time professional experience required in education, human services or other related areas. Master’s degree in student personnel or related field may be substituted for two years full-time professional experience.
- Experience with student development at the college level
- Evidence of involvement in the Asian/Pacific American community (includes more than ESL tutoring or teaching, living abroad in Asia or majoring in Asian Studies).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with diverse groups within Asian/Pacific American population, at the college level.
- Ability to effectively demonstrate an understanding of the needs and concerns of Asian/Pacific American college students and their families.
- Experience in program development and implementation, at the college level.
- Demonstrated sensitivity and commitment to other aspects of diversity or diverse populations.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective collaborative relationships with campus departments.
- Evidence of strong organizational skills and able to complete multiple tasks in a busy environment.
- Experience with teaching, staff development, and staff supervision.
- Experience with assessment, ACCESS, word processing, spread sheets, data bases, desktop publishing, e-mail and listserv management, and web page management.
- Experience in program and office assessment.
- Experience in implementing retention strategies.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and support programs (such as the annual “Asian Fest”) that enhance cultural awareness on campus and surrounding community by working with students, other campus offices/departments, and resources within the community.
- Work closely with students that may have questions related to their transition to the university, academics, financial aid, career options, campus resources or a variety of other areas.
- Have working knowledge of A/PASS and campus resources, policies, and procedures.
- Co-teach A/PASS classes when offered and conduct presentations related to diversity.
- Assist with the hiring, training, and supervision of student staff
- Coordinate and provide on-going support for special projects performed by office student paraprofessionals.
- Provide support to student organizations affiliated with the office.
- Serve as a positive role model and mentor to students.
- Represent the office in the Director’s absence.
- Requires some weekends and nights.
- Additional duties as assigned.
Salary and Starting Date:
Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience, plus University benefits package. Projected starting date is August 1, 2008.

Updated information about office and campus events, sponsored activities, job/internship opportunities, available scholarships, cultural resources, faculty/staff/student profiles, and more are also a part of the web page. In addition, there are links from the page to various student organizations, such as an Asian Interest Sorority, Multicultural Interest Fraternity, Hui 'O Hawai'i, the Korean American Student Association (KASA), Kulturang Pilipin@ (Club KP), and Ramnime.
Specific Job Responsibilities:
- Updating information on all the A/PASS sponsored programs (e.g. P.A.L.S, Peer Contact, T.E.A. Time, Academic Achievement, and Asian Fest).
- Posting information in a timely manner.
- Working with the Lory Student Center Marketing Department to keep our website updated.
- Soliciting and/or writing monthly cultural issue articles.
- Attending staff trainings and regularly scheduled staff and supervisory meetings with the Assistant Director.
- Writing monthly profile of A/PA student, faculty or staff member.
- Maintaining monthly on-line newsletter (with program information, announcement, cultural articles, profiles, etc.).
- Managing A/PASS Listserv.
- Updating & posting information on the University Calendar.
- Maintaining contact with Program Coordinators to keep student organization and other office programming information updated.
- Marketing the web page and other A/PASS programs.
- Evaluating the effectiveness of the web page.

The Education Program Coordinator will serve to further educate the CSU community and the Fort Collins community about issues of diversity, including the history, culture and issues facing the Asian/Pacific American community. This position will represent the A/PASS office to the campus and the city of Fort Collins. This is a relatively new position for the office and will likely be evolving as the academic year unfolds.
Job duties include:
- Providing students with current information about diversity issues pertaining to Asian/Pacific Americans.
- Representing the office through panel discussions and the "Ask The Asian/Pacific American" (ATAPA) Project.
- Marketing of programs.
- Seeking to create collaborative programs with other CSU entities, especially Advocacy offices (Black Student Services, El Centro Student Services, Native American Student Services, Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Student Services, Resources for Disabled Students and Women's Programs and Studies).
- Maintaining accurate records and on-going records of contacts made throughout the year.
- As a representative of the A/PASS office, coordinators are encouraged to attend other multicultural programs sponsored by other campus offices, student organizations, and academic departments.
- Attending staff trainings and regularly scheduled staff and supervisory meetings with the Assistant Director.

The coordinator will also coordinate assessment for the CSU community and the Fort Collins community. This position will represent the A/PASS office to the campus and the city of Fort Collins.

- Coordinating assessment for first through fourth year students concerning retention.

- Working with Alumni Center to create connections with alumni.

The Peer Contact Program is an integral part of Asian/Pacific American Student Services and serves as one important way to contact new Asian/Pacific American students at Colorado State University. Your efforts are essential in positively representing A/PASS and sharing all of its resources with the campus community. Within this position, your primary goals will be attempting to create connections with new Colorado State University students (first years and transfers) and to serve as a resource, guide, and friend to them.
Specific Peer Contact job duties include:
- Meeting all new students at the beginning of the semester and maintaining contact with them throughout their first year.
- Ensuring that all new transfer students are also contacted throughout the year and that living off campus does not exclude students from your outreach.
- Maintaining accurate and on-going records of student contacts throughout the year.
- Attending staff trainings, regularly scheduled staff meetings, peer contact meetings and supervisory meetings with Assistant Director.
- Assisting in the academic achievement program for new students and helping them find the resources they need to successfully navigate the CSU environment.
- Providing students with current information regarding university policies/procedures.
- Serving as a positive role model to students.
- Coordinating a variety of programs geared towards supporting new students through the first year transition.
- Attending peer mentoring workshops offered by Advocacy and/or the University Counseling Center.
- Peer contacts are encouraged to attend with their assigned students any multicultural programs sponsored by other advocacy offices, student organizations, and other campus departments.
- Preparing final report at the end of the academic year that includes an assessment of the past year's activities and suggestions for changes that might be made.
