From Fu Manchu to Kim Jong-il: Asians in American Media
WHY: Over the past century — from the early years of silent melodramas to the contemporary era of Hollywood blockbusters and independent cinema — the American film industry has continued to perpetuate such Asian stereotypes as Fu Manchu, Madame Butterfly, and the “dragon lady.” Moreover, during the first half of the twentieth century, major Asian roles were frequently played by White actors in make-up (a practice known as “yellowface”), who imitated accents in often exaggerated ways (what might be termed “yellowvoice”).
In this workshop, we will discuss the contradictory status of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and South Asian images in contemporary American media, wherein the popularity of new Asian American stars (Lucy Liu, Sandra Oh, John Cho, Kal Penn, etc.) is counterbalanced by a resurgence in retrograde representations, as seen in such post-9/11 cultural productions as Die Another Day and Team America.
Presented by Dr. Eric Aoki (Department of Speech Communication) and Dr. David Scott Diffrient (Department of Speech Communication)
WHEN: Wednesday, April 30th, from 12:00pm-2:00pm
WHERE: Lory Student Center 214-216
